Schizophrenia is a mental illness where your imagination and reality are mixed together. People with schizophrenia aren’t able to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not and this can cause them to interact with things not real. My mother has this illness, and many people in our town shunned her for it. They thought she was a witch when she would scream that she saw a giant insect or when she was talking to someone that didn’t exist. When I talked about it with BRAIN members, they suggested ways to at least help her cope with her illness since there were no centers where I lived. So to help her without medication, we bought her a music player and a journal. Whenever she hears voices or sees things, she closes her eyes and listens to music. When the hallucination goes away, she writes down what she heard or saw. This has helped her be able to live with her Schizophrenia as we look for a place to give her medical help.
